Needs to Fly South For the Winter

Review: Frenchy Bird (Wii U eShop) 630x10

Flappy Bird inspired games, clones, and anything else related to the original game have all had the same issues as the original. Beyond the simplicity of the core concept on hand, each title has failed to bring any real personality or new features to the gameplay, which results in a quickly stale concept. Most of these games exist seemingly for no real reason other than to cash in, which is where Frenchy Bird steps in with its goal of being at least somewhat unique.

Unfortunately for Carbon Fire Studio, their efforts only slightly paid off. The core gameplay remains exactly the same as every other title in the genre lately; tapping the screen or the A button helps a bird to fly through boundaries which act as a scoring system. Frenchy Bird at least ditches the classic pipes and goes for a new feel, with streetlamps crowding the streets of France for our avian friend to awkwardly flap through.

The game is presented at a slightly over the shoulder, yet still on the side view, which looks like it would be more annoying than it really is. The camera actually doesn't hurt gameplay at all, and offers a unique perspective of the upcoming barriers. Flying through different numbers of lamps offers up some stamps to use to post to Miiverse as well, all of which have a nice hand-drawn feel to them.

Unfortunately, this is where any improvements stop. Frenchy Bird essentially offers Flappy Bird with a French skin, new camera angle and stamps. There is an online leaderboard for the top 100, but there's no incentive to continue once you obtain all of the stamps, which are hardly an incentive anyway.

Frenchy Bird is the same old game with a new coat of paint splashed on top, which ultimately doesn't do much to progress the stale style of game it blatantly copies. The skills shown graphics wise of Carbon Fire Studio would be better off designing almost any other game, since Frenchy Bird is just plain boring at this point.

3/10
