The Begining of An Era
In a surprising announcement today, Nintendo has revealed their plans to take the Smart Device Market by storm. Stockholders have been asking for this for years, and Nintendo finally has answered their pleas by partnering with DeNA as a publisher. Nintendo plans on making new games using existing IPs, and not straight up ports.
"Please also note that, even if we use the same IP on our dedicated video game systems and smart devices, we will not port the titles for the former to the latter just as they are. There are significant differences in the controls, strengths and weaknesses between the controllers for dedicated game systems and the touchscreens of smart devices. We have no intention at all to port existing game titles for dedicated game platforms to smart devices because if we cannot provide our consumers with the best possible play experiences, it would just ruin the value of Nintendo's IP."Nintendo and DeNa have both stated they will be buying market shares within each others companies, roughly ten percent each. Additionally DeNA will be helping Nintendo to have a unified account system for all platforms, effectively replacing Club Nintendo as a rewards program.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the conference was Nintendo NX. Little is known about Nintendo NX. It is not a part of the Quality of Life Program, but a new dedicated gaming platform. Whether or not this is a replacement to the Wii U, 3DS or both is yet to be said by The Big N. Expect to hear more about the Nintendo NX in 2016.
Nintendo partnering with DeNA certainly came out of left field today. This partnership looks to be very promising for each company, with everyone, gamers included benefiting in the long run.
