Brings Life Back to a Decaying Idea

Review: Undead Storm Nightmare (3DS eShop) Zlcfzs11

Let's face it, zombies have been overused beyond any tolerable point throughout the past ten years. This fad, which began with good intentions, began becoming a cop-out for lazy developers and simply decayed over time. While the topic of the undead in videogames is rotting away, Undead Storm Nightmare manages to use it in a way that doesn't make you want to moan.

One of the largest problems many zombie games have is they go into too much detail to try to explain where the zombies came from (almost always from human scientific error) what they've done (took over the world) and over-saturates the player with this unnecessary and plot hole filled backstory. G-Style simply places you in a dungeon, arms you with a gun and a knife, and tells you to kill zombies- and we couldn't be happier that they chose to ignore the cliché associated with Zombies.

What results is a solid shooting action game where you traverse through multiple levels with the goal of simply reaching the end safely. Undead Storm Nightmare takes combat in a unique way, essentially becoming a twin-stick shooter using only the circle pad along with the L and R buttons. The circle pad moves you around across your 2D level and the L & R buttons rotate you in either direction to shoot at enemies. While it may sound like a strange setup, it works fairly well and after one or two levels you'll be moving naturally.

In battle you have access to the touchscreen which has a number of useful tools. Each of your four currently equipped weapons is shown, along with ammo levels, and tapping each one switches to it seamlessly. You can also see how many health recovery potions you have left, which you'll be using often especially in later levels.

Each level is a three stage level capping off in a boss battle, and these are purchased along with weapons and upgrades in the game's menu. The menu is the central hub for your activity, as you can buy new weapons, upgrade them, set up different groupings of equips and more all fairly simply. Purchasing levels is the most challenging part as you usually can't afford both a new level and weapons at once, so you'll be replaying the levels a few times to grind for money.

Thankfully the combat is fun and addicting enough that this never feels tedious or repetitive. Slaying zombies is a blast in Undead Storm Nightmare, and the endless waves of enemies are the right mix of simple yet challenging to combat. For a game that chooses to focus on combat over story, G-Style managed to nail the fighting and weapon choices, giving the title great replay value.

One place where this title does falter a bit is in its graphics, which don't support the system's 3D effect. The graphics themselves aren't anything special, nor are they very detailed. You can visibly define what everything is on screen, and there certainly is a lot going on at once, but the visuals still could have used some variety overall to enhance the experience. Thankfully there is little to no lag to be found, which makes for a fast paced game.

Undead Storm Nightmare bucks the trend of boring zombie titles and simply presents a fun shooter title at a cheap price. Wiping out line after line of enemies feels great and the number of weapons to do so with is large enough to make the whole experience a varied one. While the graphics aren't up to par with other 3DS titles, and the controls might seem weird, the gameplay is a blast and these faults are easily overlooked.

8/10
