Rolling Around at the Speed of Light

Review - Proun+ (3DS eShop) Maxresdefault

In recent years, more and more unique racing games have graced the Nintendo eShop, bringing a large variety of different racing games from which to choose. From titles like ATV Wild Ride to others like AiRace Xeno, there truly are many different types of racers to choose from on the 3DS eShop alone. Proun+ is certainly a completely new kind of racer on the 3DS’s eShop, and it sets itself apart from most of the other racing titles in a multitude of ways.

In Proun+, you race as a sphere around a cylindrical rail of sorts. There is one path forward along this rail, but the challenge comes on avoiding the objects on that rail. Much of what you’ll be doing is simply moving left or right to avoid obstacles, regardless of your objective. You can also boost (once you charge it up) and brake (accelerating is automatic), but that’s about as far as it goes in terms of controls. Sound simple? It is. Easy? Not so much.
There are three main modes to play, as well as a time trial mode on the side. A Race is just what you’d expect, with you racing against a five other spheres to get first, second, or third. There’s a Points mode, in which you have to pass through points barriers to rack up as high of a score as you can in a few laps. The last main mode is Endless mode; in this mode, you just have to avoid obstacles for as long as possible. We called Time Trials a side mode because it’s not required for progression; this mode is essentially a Race, except you’re racing your best time on a certain course instead of a computer. If you want to add another human aspect to the game, there’s an online leaderboard (which sometimes flips the 10th and 1st best player) for every level, which can add a challenge. To get through levels, you must complete the specified challenge on a certain course and do well enough to get at least one star in a level (and a max of 3). To get stars in a Race, you’ll need to get third or higher; in Endless, it’s a certain amount of time, and in Points you need to get above a certain number of points.

Beating levels is important for unlocking more levels, and once you unlock all the regular levels in a certain difficulty, you can go to the next difficulty level (or you can try the bonus levels in the current difficulty. When the difficulty goes up, not only do the objectives become bigger, but the computers get better and the speed increases. In fact, to give you an idea of how fast this game is, the slowest difficulty (besides Relaxed, which is more of a tutorial difficulty) in this game is Fast. And the fastest is Speed of Light, which is insanely fast. There are 33 levels in each difficulty, which adds up to 99 stars in each difficulty to obtain, if you’re a completionist. You’ll be working for hours on many of them, as the harder difficulties can be incredibly tricky.
It’s very important to mention the art style for the game. The graphics are modern-arts inspired, and they were crisp and very pleasing to see. The level of 3D in this game makes these graphics all the better; in fact, the 3D is a little too good at times, and we had to turn it down a bit (which is not something we typically do). As a side note, there was only one level in the game that lagged slightly, and while it was noticeable it wasn’t terrible. The music also fun and somewhat jazzy, which yet again added to the feel of the game, and it definitely adds to the game in its own way.

Going full circle, this is truly a game that brings it’s own unique twist on the racing genre to the 3DS eShop. It does have a few flaws, but it has a fairly good difficulty curve and we enjoyed almost everything about it. Everything from the graphics to the concept to the feel of speed was well executed in Proun+, and it’s a game we’d recommend to anyone looking for a creative and simple racing game on the 3DS eShop.

8/10
