E3: Pokemon Alpha Sapphire / Omega Ruby
The Hype Grows with Trailers and Gameplay Videos
(Note: all links will open in new tabs.) Coming into E3, Pokémon fans were eager to hear something about the two latest titles in the franchise -- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. To this point, we had seen one "trailer" with no real footage and unofficial boxart, another clip disappointingly showing only a cutscene of Groudon and Kyogre preparing for combat, and finally a decent show of images in Japanese manga video game and toy magazine Coro Coro last Saturday. Still, contained hype for the past month has grown into a need for a quality trailer with video of the adventure.
Fortunately, E3 was brimming with footage of the remakes. Our first look was found in Nintendo's digital event; and, to be quite honest, it's probably one of the best trailers in the franchise's history.
Gameplay-wise, we get some nice views of the overworld in the form of Mr. Briney's Boat (1:19), Fortree City (1:20), Cycling Road (1:21), unknown locations that could be anything from redone gyms to the Trick Master's house (1:22 - 1:24), the player talking to Steven (1:25), and Team Aqua's (Magma's) secret bases (1:27). Afterwards we see a demonstration of the new mega evolution item to be used in the new installments -- the Mega Bangle -- and the [then...] newest megas: Mega Swampert and Mega Sceptile. The newly-made official site also updated with an impressive map.
The announcements weren't over yet, however. On the second day of E3, the Pokemon Company gave to us:
Overall, this was just a simple video announcing Mega Sableye. Already found in the competitive world thanks to its unique niche in the Prankster ability and only one weakness, Mega Sableye doesn't have too many changed characteristics outside of its new ruby shield. It appears possibly a bit sharper and more devious.
This last gameplay trailer featured footage similar to the first. Starting off with the overworld shots, we saw Mr. Briney's boat again (0:15), a scenic view of Beautifly more-than-likely right outside Oldale Town (0:17), and the reintroduction of the Mach and Acro bikes in Granite Cave (0:19) and possibly Route 119 (0:20) respectively. The majority of the video is spent with the three starter lines -- Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, and their evolutions. Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon also get some more time in the spotlight with more in-battle demonstration. (1:21) Finally, from 1:23 forward, we get some footage of another mega evolution released with Sceptile and Swampert: Diancie. Mega Diancie. It's demonstrated in battle before we learn that Dianie is to be distributed to Pokemon X and Y players ("...details coming soon") while its mega stone seems to be exclusive to Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby.
And that seems to be it for Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby for E3! Fans were surely given enough material to maintain their hype. We still await confirmed game music, but we've gotten a plethora of battle video (although it's simply based on X and Y's system) and overworld scenes.
